THE LANDSCAPE

One country, several safari moods

Kenya rewards a route with room to settle in. The Maasai Mara is known for its broad grasslands and wildlife viewing. Amboseli brings a different scale: wetlands, elephants and views toward Kilimanjaro when the weather is clear. In the north, Samburu or Laikipia can add a change of scenery and pace.

Maasai Mara

Make time for game drives without turning every day into a transfer. Ask where your camp sits and which areas its activities cover.

Amboseli

Think wide horizons, elephant habitat and a landscape shaped by seasonal water. A mountain view depends on the day.

Northern Kenya

Samburu and Laikipia offer a different setting. Choose a stay for its location and the activities that suit your group.

EXPLORE KENYA

Maasai Mara, Amboseli and the north

Shape the route

A Kenya itinerary works best when it gives each region more than a passing visit. The Maasai Mara is the familiar grassland safari, while Amboseli is shaped by wetlands and elephant habitat. Samburu has drier terrain and a different mix of wildlife; Laikipia depends on the particular conservancy and its activities. Pick two areas if time is short, and compare camp locations as carefully as the park names.

On the ground

Game drives are the core of most trips. In some conservancies, guided walks or night drives may be possible, subject to the property and local rules. A coast extension can follow the safari if you have extra days. Ask for the exact activity plan, vehicle arrangements and whether park or conservancy fees are included.

Before you travel

Travel between regions can use roads or domestic flights. A flight saves time but still needs transfers at both ends. Migration viewing in the Mara varies with rainfall and herd movement, so dates alone cannot guarantee a crossing. For families or first-time visitors, a well-paced route with fewer hotel changes often makes the days more rewarding.

WHEN TO START PLANNING

Bring your dates and priorities

Conditions vary across regions and seasons, and wildlife is never scheduled. Share your travel window, group size and what you most want from the journey. A useful proposal explains why a route fits those details.
